SUMMARY:SUMMER '26CHARTER OAK String QuartetMusic of Maurice RAVEL\, Jonathan KANE and more...
DESCRIPTION:Maurice Ravel: String Quartet in F major\, M.35\nJonathan Kane: “Convergence” for String Quartet\nMichael McLean: Rhumba\, Czardas\, Fandango\n\nCharter Oak String Quartet:\nAdrian Sylveen\nBrunilda Myftaraj\nJonathan Kane\nZachary Sears \nComposed in 1903\, Ravel’s String Quartet in F major is his first major chamber work and remains one of his most admired creations. Dedicated to his teacher Gabriel Fauré\, the quartet balances classical clarity with daring harmonic color. The first movement unfolds with radiant lyricism\, its themes delicately interwoven among the four instruments. The second movement\, a sparkling scherzo\, features pizzicato rhythms and exotic modal inflections that reveal Ravel’s fascination with Spanish and Eastern sonorities. The slow third movement offers a deeply expressive\, almost dreamlike atmosphere\, while the finale bursts with rhythmic vitality and bold contrasts. Ravel’s quartet exemplifies his gift for refinement and innovation\, standing as a cornerstone of early 20th‑century French chamber music. \nJonathan Kane’s “Convergence” is a musical exploration of the mathematical concept of the alternating convergent series. Two separate themes are presented\, one heavy and dark\, the other open and airy. As the piece oscillates between the two themes\, they transform\, each becoming more like the other until they meet in the center. The instruments\, too\, converge\, with first the viola and cello and later all four joining together to end the piece in unison. The quartet was written while Kane was a student at the Eastman School of Music\, studying both composition and mathematics\, as an attempt to bridge the seemingly disparate fields of math and music. It was originally performed by the Ying Quartet\, quartet in residence at the Eastman School. \nRhumba\, Czardas & Fandango by Michael Mclean are much more colorful and varied than its titles suggest. It’s a compact suite of character‑driven dances\, each written to give a standard string quartet both rhythmic flair and idiomatic fun\, all crafted to be immediately engaging for performers and audiences alike.

SUMMARY:SUMMER '26Brahms: Clarinet QuintetRavel: String QuartetKane:“Convergence”
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Kane\, (composer‑in‑residence): “Convergence” for string quartet\nJohannes Brahms: Clarinet Quintet\, op. 115\nMaurice Ravel: String Quartet \nCharter Oak String Quartet (Sylveen\, Myftaraj\, Kane\, Sears)\nJonathan Towney\, clarinet \nBrahms’s Clarinet Quintet (1891)\, composed for Richard Mühlfeld\, is a late‑style masterpiece suffused with autumnal warmth. The clarinet blends seamlessly into the strings\, its voice carrying lyrical melancholy in the opening movement. A tender Adagio follows\, serene yet pierced by a passionate outburst. The Andantino offers grace and charm\, leading into a playful scherzo. The Finale returns to darker hues\, weaving earlier themes into variations that dissolve into quiet resignation—an intimate\, profoundly moving farewell. \nRavel’s String Quartet in F major (1903)\, dedicated to Gabriel Fauré\, dazzles with radiant lyricism and daring harmonic color. Its sparkling scherzo\, with pizzicato rhythms and exotic inflections\, reveals Ravel’s fascination with Spanish and Eastern sonorities. The slow movement glows with dreamlike beauty\, while the finale bursts with rhythmic vitality. \nJonathan Kane’s “Convergence” is a musical exploration of the mathematical concept of the alternating convergent series. SUMMARY:SUMMER '26MAGIC of CHAMBER MUSIC:FAURE: Violin Sonata in AMOZART: Piano Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Brunilda Myftaraj\, violin\nIna June\, piano\nJonathan Kane\, viola\nCamden Archambeau\, Cello \nMozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor stands at the birth of an entirely new chamber‑music genre. Written in 1785\, it was the first substantial work to combine piano\, violin\, viola\, and cello—a combination that would later inspire Schumann\, Brahms\, Dvořák\, and Fauré. Yet its creation was anything but smooth: the quartet emerged from a commission that nearly collapsed\, a publisher who panicked\, and a composer unwilling to compromise.Publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister had asked Mozart for three piano quartets\, expecting light\, marketable music for Vienna’s amateur musicians. Instead\, Mozart delivered a work of dramatic weight\, technical difficulty\, and operatic intensity. Hoffmeister feared it would not sell and released Mozart from the remainder of the contract. The G‑minor Quartet thus arrived not as a polite salon piece\, but as a statement of artistic independence. Despite its rocky start\, the G‑minor Quartet became the first great piano quartet in history. Its blend of symphonic ambition\, chamber intimacy\, and pianistic brilliance set a model that later composers would expand into some of the 19th century’s finest chamber works. \nComposed in 1876\, Fauré’s Violin Sonata in A major marked his arrival as a mature voice in French chamber music. The work blends lyricism and clarity with subtle harmonic daring\, foreshadowing the elegance of French impressionism. The first movement’s radiant energy gives way to a tender Andante\, where melody unfolds with quiet intimacy. A playful Scherzo sparkles with rhythmic wit\, and the Finale restores warmth and brilliance. Fauré’s refined craftsmanship and emotional restraint create music that feels both spontaneous and timeless\, a perfect balance of passion and poise.

SUMMARY:Vivaldi: Stabat Mater & Magnificat with the Moniuszko Choir & VMI Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Antonio Vivaldi: Stabat Mater\, RV 621\, Magnificat\, RV. 610 \nThe Moniuszko Choir\nVirtuosi Institute Ensemble\nAllison Lindsay\, alto\nMary McCue\, soprano\nAdrian Sylveen\, conductor \n\nAntonio Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater (RV 621) and Magnificat (RV 610) stand as poignant examples of his sacred vocal music\, revealing his deep sensitivity to liturgical texts. Stabat Mater\, composed in 1712\, features a solo alto\, strings\, and continuo\, unfolding the Virgin Mary’s grief at the crucifixion through solemn tempos\, expressive dissonances\, and emotionally charged melodic lines. In contrast\, the Magnificat is a celebratory canticle of Mary’s praise\, written for mixed choir\, soloists\, and orchestra. Its twelve brief movements balance vivid contrasts\, intricate counterpoint\, and moments of spiritual exuberance. Both works showcase Vivaldi’s mastery in channeling sacred texts into music that transcends mere ritual\, merging the emotional depth of devotion with the stylistic flair of the Venetian Baroque. Together\, they illustrate his ability to express sorrow and joy with equal conviction\, offering audiences a glimpse into the sacred heart of his musical imagination.
