Written in 1785\, it was the first substantial work to combine piano\, violin\, viola\, and cello—a combination that would later inspire Schumann\, Brahms\, Dvořák\, and Fauré. Yet its creation was anything but smooth: the quartet emerged from a commission that nearly collapsed\, a publisher who panicked\, and a composer unwilling to compromise.Publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister had asked Mozart for three piano quartets\, expecting light\, marketable music for Vienna’s amateur musicians. Instead\, Mozart delivered a work of dramatic weight\, technical difficulty\, and operatic intensity. Hoffmeister feared it would not sell and released Mozart from the remainder of the contract. The G‑minor Quartet thus arrived not as a polite salon piece\, but as a statement of artistic independence. Despite its rocky start\, the G‑minor Quartet became the first great piano quartet in history. DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Kane\, (composer‑in‑residence) — “Convergence” for string quartet\nJohannes Brahms — Clarinet Quintet\, op. 115\nMaurice Ravel — String Quartet \nCharter Oak String Quartet (Sylveen\, Myftaraj\, Kane\, Sears)\nJonathan Towney\, clarinet \nComposed in 1891 for clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld\, Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet is one of the composer’s late masterpieces\, suffused with autumnal warmth and introspection. The opening movement unfolds with lyrical melancholy\, the clarinet weaving seamlessly into the string texture. A tender Adagio follows\, its serene beauty interrupted by a passionate central episode. The Andantino offers a graceful interlude\, leading into a playful scherzo‑like section. The Finale returns to darker hues\, recalling earlier themes in a set of variations that fade into quiet resignation. This quintet epitomizes Brahms’s late style: intimate\, reflective\, and profoundly moving. \nComposed in 1903\, Ravel’s String Quartet in F major is his first major chamber work and remains one of his most admired creations. Dedicated to his teacher Gabriel Fauré\, the quartet balances classical clarity with daring harmonic color. The first movement unfolds with radiant lyricism\, its themes delicately interwoven among the four instruments. The second movement\, a sparkling scherzo\, features pizzicato rhythms and exotic modal inflections that reveal Ravel’s fascination with Spanish and Eastern sonorities. The slow third movement offers a deeply expressive\, almost dreamlike atmosphere\, while the finale bursts with rhythmic vitality and bold contrasts. Ravel’s quartet exemplifies his gift for refinement and innovation\, standing as a cornerstone of early 20th‑century French chamber music. \nJonathan Kane’s “Convergence” is a musical exploration of the mathematical concept of the alternating convergent series. Two separate themes are presented\, one heavy and dark\, the other open and airy. As the piece oscillates between the two themes\, they transform\, each becoming more like the other until they meet in the center. The instruments\, too\, converge\, with first the viola and cello and later all four joining together to end the piece in unison. The quartet was written while Kane was a student at the Eastman School of Music\, studying both composition and mathematics\, as an attempt to bridge the seemingly disparate fields of math and music. It was originally performed by the Ying Quartet\, quartet in residence at the Eastman School.

DESCRIPTION:Johannes Brahms — Clarinet Quintet\, op. 115\nMaurice Ravel — String Quartet \nCharter Oak String Quartet (Sylveen\, Myftaraj\, Stowell\, Sears)\nJonathan Towney\, clarinet \nJonathan Towne won the Artist’s International Competition in New York City as the clarinetist in the Kammer Woodwind Quintet\, and as a result\, performed two recitals in Carnegie Recital Hall. He holds a B.M. from Ithaca College and a M.M. from Indiana University where he was an Associate Instructor of clarinet. He currently performs with the Eastern CT Symphony Orchestra\, CT Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra\, Waterbury Symphony Orchestra\, Caspian Festival Orchestra in VT\, and other groups in Eastern CT. He is a former Adjunct Professor of Music at the University of Rhode Island\, where he taught Clarinet and is retired from the United States Coast Guard Band after a 30 year career. In 1989\, he traveled with the Coast Guard Band to the former Soviet Union and performed on a ten day tour. He soloed with the Coast Guard Band on many occasions including at the prestigious Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. He is a member of the Prism Woodwind Trio with his wife\, bassoonist Rebecca Noreen. They perform together often in chamber and orchestra concerts throughout New England.
